Dorothy is such a love! She has quite a sweet and gentle nature about her. She enjoyed grooming and being groomed. Her trainer Marissa will know when Dorothy is totally relaxed because Dorothy will often put a finger in her own ear or ears.
In the warmer months, Dorothy likes nothing more than sitting by a window. Like many of our monkeys, she prefers curling up in big, soft, fluffy blankets (that’s also the prime time to file her nails!) favors toys that can be used as tools to help crush her food.
Baths are her FAVORITE! She is very particular with her bath water. Some of our monkeys like playing with the bubbles. Others like splashing. Dorothy likes to stand under the running water from the faucet. She wants the water not too hot and not too cold. It has to be just right!
Dorothy has Type II diabetes. Like humans, all other primates are very susceptible to diabetes, especially as they get older. That’s why all of our monkeys are on extremely strict diets of commercial monkey chow supplemented with whole oats, vitamins, vegetables, water, and a small amount of apple and nuts. Dorothy is one of a few monkeys in our program who also need insulin shots every day, which she has been trained to see as an easy and positively associated part of her day.
